Garlic shrimp is a classic Hawaiian dish that everyone loves, whether you’re a local or tourist. Located on the edge of the pond used to farm the shrimp, Fumi’s Kahuku Shrimp should definitely be on your itinerary. The shrimp are fresh, as they are harvested every morning for use that day. The classic butter garlic shrimp is always delicious, and goes perfectly with the two scoops of white rice with a liberal portion of decadent garlic butter topping.
Fumi’s Kahuku Shrimp serves their plates with two scoops of rice, and a side of corn and pineapple. Popular items include the Butter Garlic Shrimp, the Spicy Garlic Shrimp, and the Coconut Shrimp. Like most shrimp spots, Fumi’s serves their garlic shrimp with the shell on. I personally like the crispiness and eat them whole, while my wife doesn’t like to bother with the mess and goes with the shell less deep fried coconut shrimp. Pro tip – if you want to peel the shrimp, scrape the sauce and garlic off of the shell beforehand so that you can dip the shrimp meat into all that buttery, garlicky goodness.
There are many options for this local dish, but we definitely like that Fumi’s serves local grown, Kahuku shrimp in their shrimp plates. You know there’s some love there if they take it literally from the farm out back to the table. Kahuku is about an hour away from Waikiki, so you’ll want to get yourself a rental car or join a tour that heads to the north side of the island. If you decide to head out, definitely leave in the morning so you don’t get stuck in heavy traffic around commute times.
