Weekends Go Better with Beer

National Beer Day is coming up on April 7, and what better way to celebrate the weekend than with beer?  Admittedly, we don’t necessarily need a national day for beer to entice us with the frothy brew, but we thought we would share a few places that offer some great flavors that can only be enhanced by a cold one.

Camado Ramen Tavern

Sure, ramen and beer seem like a match made in heaven, but besides all the amazing bowls of ramen Camado Ramen Tavern has to offer, have you considered simply snacking on some of their quick appetizers while enjoying one of their Japanese, American, and local beers?

If you are into fatty pork, the seared cha-shu (charsiu) with white onion elicits enough adipose addiction that begs for a cold glass of Kirin on tap.  Then there is the spicy garlic edamame, spicy bean sprout namul, or shishito pepper with Japanese dashi that may have you reaching for a bottle of Sapporo, Asahi, or Echigo.  Even the pork gyoza or negi mayo ponzu gyoza sound like they would require some washing down with some Kona Longboard or Kona Big Wave.

Giovanni Pastrami

Although its name is accurate in that the pastrami Reubens are among the signature dishes to try, Giovanni Pastrami also serves Round Table Pizza.

Pizza and beer are almost made for each other, so consider a Hawaiian pizza with ham and pineapple, their version of a Margherita with creamy garlic sauce, chopped garlic, basil, and sliced tomatoes, or the Round Table Pizza classic King Arthur Supreme with pepperoni, Portuguese sausage, mushrooms, green peppers, white onions, and black olives.  There will be a lot of decisions to be made, since there are many more pizza options from which to choose, as well as over a dozen beers on tap to go with.

While many are local brews from Aloha Brewing Co., Honolulu Beer Works, Maui Brewing Company, Kona Brewing Company, and Paradise Ciders, Giovanni Pastrami has its very own private label beer Giovanni Pastrami Blonde Ale that may be worth checking out.

Five Star Shrimp & Waikiki Brewing Company in Waikiki Food Hall

If you take a trip into the Waikiki Food Hall on the third floor of the Royal Hawaiian Center, you will discover a once popular food truck that transformed into a brick-and-mortar in the heart of Waikiki.

Five Star Shrimp tempts with its plump garlic shrimp, spicy shrimp, and lemon butter shrimp, accompanied by rice and salad. If you are having beer though, you may want to just go for the shrimp-only plate to pair with a cold one from its neighbor also located in the Waikiki Food Hall, Waikiki Brewing Company.

Garlic Shrimp by Five Star Shrimp

The popular local bar serving Hawaiian craft beer brews locally.  One of its recommendations for women is the Hana Hou Hefe, an unfiltered American-style hefeweizen brewed with an orange peel and some strawberry puree.  Don’t worry, there are other more masculine flavors too!  And for just $5 per pint, you can enjoy a pupu session for hours with dozens of shrimp.

Chiba-ken

The tiny Japanese izakaya or pub located on the West end of Waikiki serves a lineup of sushi–both nigiri and rolls–and sashimi.

And the perfect pairing for raw (and cooked) seafood is obviously beer.  But wait, there are even other bites to consider there, such as cold appetizers including edamame, deep-fried dishes including tempura, Japanese fried chicken (karaage), katsu, and fried oysters, yakitori skewers of grilled chicken, pork, beef, and vegetables, and specialty dishes such as kisarazu gyoza, steamed clams with sake, pork belly with soft boiled egg, and more.

There is even a happy hour after 9:00 p.m. featuring special prices.  And the best part is that with a coupon, which Oahu Best Coupons provides, there is an amazing deal for Sapporo Draft beer for just 99 cents.  Now, that is worth celebrating.
